Another Parable

On Sunday we looked at the parable of the sower who scattered seeds along the ground. Mark records two more parables, each using a seed metaphor.
Why seeds? Because they are small and inconspicuous, but have great potential to grow, much like the Kingdom of God.
Jesus tells the story of a seed that grows without much effort from the man who scattered it. He plants and harvests, but doesn't seem to be part of the process of the seeds growth.
What's Jesus' point? The Kingdom doesn't grow quickly, yet it grows. Even if we tried to stop it, we couldn't. Our job is to spread the message of Christ and reap the harvest, all the way until the final harvest when Christ returns.
Jesus' second parable is about a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds. The seed grows in a way that is almost unbelievable. The growth of the Kingdom doesn't come quickly. Rather, it starts small, but ends up so substantial that it provides blessing and rest for those that come into contact with it.
What does this have to do with you? Jesus tells these stories to give us incredible hope that God's kingdom is on the move even if it seems to be moving in tiny increments. One day, when Christ returns, we will see the full ramifications of our King and His Kingdom. Take hope, believer.
